Euro 2024 Golden Boot Race: Michel Platini, Cristiano Ronaldo, and the Top Scorers in European Championship History

Michel Platini, Marco van Basten, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Milan Baros are among the legendary names who have led the scoring charts at European Championships.

These grand tournaments can shape and define careers, offering a stage for the best strikers to achieve legacy-defining moments through a Golden Boot victory.

However, not all Golden Boot triumphs are created equal. For instance, Platini’s impressive nine-goal tally at Euro 84 is far more remarkable than Fernando Torres’ three goals for Spain in 2012.

While it’s unlikely we’ll see a campaign like Platini’s in Germany this summer, there’s still a fierce competition for the Golden Boot at Euro 2024.

Currently, own goals lead the scoring charts, while Romelu Lukaku has had three goals disallowed, which could have placed him at the top.

Ten players have managed to score multiple goals this summer, but two of them, Georges Mikautadze and Ivan Schranz, have already exited the tournament. They share the top spot with three goals each, alongside Germany’s Jamal Musiala, who has shined for the hosts and added to his tally in the round of 16 against Denmark.

Harry Kane was a favorite to top the scoring charts before the tournament began, and he has scored twice despite England’s offensive struggles. Jude Bellingham rescued England’s campaign with a spectacular acrobatic kick in the final moments of their round of 16 match against Slovakia, bringing his total to two goals as well.

Germany’s Niclas Fullkrug and Kai Havertz have both scored twice, with Havertz being Julian Nagelsmann’s preferred striker.

Kylian Mbappe has scored just once from the penalty spot, but he is expected to rise in the rankings if France makes a deep run in the tournament.
