The Football Association (FA) currently has no succession plan for England head coach Gareth Southgate and is eager for him to continue beyond his current contract, which expires in December 2024. Southgate has not yet decided on his future, and the upcoming European Championships will be his fourth major tournament leading the England team.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Southgate’s position, the FA hopes he will stay on to lead the team through the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. Although four potential successors—Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, and Thomas Tuchel—have been identified, there have been no discussions with them, and no succession plan is in place.
Southgate has acknowledged that his future might depend on England’s performance in Euro 2024, with the team being one of the favorites to win. He remarked that failure to win could result in his departure, stating, “If we don’t win, I probably won’t be here anymore.”
Additionally, Southgate has been linked with the managerial position at Manchester United, but the club is still considering the future of current manager Erik ten Hag.
