Lagbaja was masked in the studio, I never saw his face, Fireboy revealed

Fireboy DML, the award-winning Nigerian artist, has opened up about his creative process and collaborations on his self-titled fourth album. The project features some of the most iconic names in Nigerian music, including the legendary Lagbaja, Grammy-nominated Afrobeat star Seun Kuti, Grammy winner Jon Batiste, and hitmaker Lojay.

In an exclusive interview with Apple Music Africa Now, Fireboy shared intriguing details about his experience recording with Lagbaja. The enigmatic artist, known for his signature mask, kept his identity hidden even during their studio sessions. “You wouldn’t believe it—Lagbaja was masked in the studio. I never got to see his face,” Fireboy revealed. This mysterious encounter only added to the specialness of the track “Back & Forth,” which Fireboy considers a standout on the album. “Lagbaja’s presence on this record means the world to me. His anonymity, represented by his mask, is exactly what makes him Lagbaja. It was a surreal experience, and I’m glad he was part of this project.”

Fireboy also delved into his collaboration with Seun Kuti, the son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. The idea to include Seun on the album came from Olamide, YBNL’s label leader and one of the album’s A&Rs. “When Olamide suggested Seun Kuti for the track, it made perfect sense. I could instantly picture Seun in a dimly lit room, his saxophone echoing through the space. He’s an amazing person—very funny, down-to-earth, and full of life. Working with him was an unforgettable experience,” Fireboy shared.

In addition to these high-profile collaborations, Fireboy paid tribute to Afropop legend Wande Coal on the album. He explained how a beat instantly took him back to the mid-2010s, evoking memories of Wande Coal’s music. “This album is a tribute to the legends who have shaped African music over the years, and it’s also a testament to my growth as an artist. I wanted to honor these greats while showcasing my evolution,” Fireboy explained.

Fireboy’s latest album not only celebrates his musical journey but also pays homage to the icons who have inspired him. With a blend of nostalgic elements and contemporary sounds, the album is set to resonate deeply with fans and solidify Fireboy’s place in the pantheon of African music.
