Michael Essien’s Properties Ordered for Auction by Ghanaian Court

Former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder, Michael Essien, faces a financial crisis that may cost him his two houses in Ghana.

The court-ordered sale of Michael Essien’s properties comes as creditors seek to recover outstanding debts. Reports from Ghana estimate one property’s value between $20 million and $30 million.

Essien’s financial troubles stem from substantial loans taken from various banks and financial institutions in Ghana. Struggling to repay these loans led to the court’s intervention. On June 12, 2024, the Deputy Sheriff of the High Court (Commercial Division) issued the sale order.

Essien began his football journey at Bastia in France before moving to Olympique Lyonnais. His exceptional skills caught Chelsea’s attention, making him one of the Premier League’s highest-paid players.

His career peaked at Chelsea, where he won Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy. Essien also played for other top European clubs, including Real Madrid and AC Milan. Despite his illustrious career, his current financial woes highlight the challenges athletes can face post-retirement.
