Pep Guardiola has acknowledged that Manchester City will aim to negotiate an agreement to keep Joao Cancelo at Barcelona if the full-back expresses a desire to stay with the La Liga club.

Cancelo joined Barcelona on a season-long loan in September and has since made 42 appearances, scoring four goals and providing five assists. Reports suggest that Cancelo wants to stay at Barca, with club president Joan Laporta indicating a desire to make the move permanent.

However, Guardiola confirmed that no agreement has been finalized, leaving Cancelo’s future uncertain. “It is a question for Txiki [Begiristain, City director]. We will sit between the clubs. If an agreement is not reached, he will have to return, but if the player wants to stay [with Barcelona], he will do it again,” Guardiola told the press.

Regarding Bernardo Silva, who has been linked with a move to Barcelona, Guardiola stated, “There has been a lot of talk but they have never called us. The Barca sports director has never called. He is a gem of a player and I hope he stays.”

Silva, under contract with City until 2026, may consider an earlier move if an offer comes. Cancelo, meanwhile, is contracted until 2027, having extended his deal before his loan to Bayern Munich. Both players will join Portugal’s squad for the upcoming European Championships.
