Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti Streaming Now on Prime Video
Now streaming on Prime Video, “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” unfolds the life of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s mother, Funmilayo. From her pioneering days as Abeokuta Grammar School’s first female student to her marriage with Israel Ransome-Kuti, the film showcases her relentless fight against injustice. Together, they founded the Abeokuta Women’s Union, challenging traditional and colonial powers.
The cast features Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, Adunni Ade, Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko, Ibrahim Suleiman, and Iremide Adeoye. The film has grossed over ₦141.5 million, per the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), and bagged multiple awards, including Best Overall Feature Film and Best Screenplay at the 2023 Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) and Best Writing (Movie) at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA).
Nollywood filmmaker Austen-Peters, known for biopics that educate the younger generation on historical figures, has another film, “House of Ga’a,” debuting on Netflix on July 26. “House of Ga’a” explores the life of Bashorun Gaha (Gaa), a significant 18th-century Yoruba leader, who used deceit and voodoo to rule.
The biopic stars Femi Branch, Mike Afolarin, Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, Ibrahim Chatta, Dele Odule, Bimbo Manuel, Lateef Adedimeji, and Femi Adebayo. Also featured are Gabriel Afolayan, Jide ‘JBlaze’ Oyegbile, Seun Akindele, Yemi Blaq, Adeniyi Johnson, Muyiwa Ademola, William Benson, Gbenga Titiloye, and Kunle Coker.
