Newcastle United Co-Owners Staveley and Ghodoussi to Leave
Newcastle United’s co-owners, Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi, are set to leave the club after three transformative years at St. James’ Park.
Staveley and Ghodoussi played pivotal roles in facilitating the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund’s (PIF) purchase of an 80 percent stake in Newcastle for £300 million in 2021, ending Mike Ashley’s 14-year reign. The Newcastle United co-owners dramatically changed the Magpies’ fate by completing their takeover when the team was 19th in the Premier League table.
One of the first major decisions by the new owners was to sack manager Steve Bruce five weeks later and appoint Eddie Howe, who guided the club to safety in 2021 and secured a spot in the UEFA Champions League the following season. Under Staveley and Ghodoussi’s ownership, the club spent almost £92 million in the first transfer window, bringing in high-profile players like Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes.
Furthermore, Newcastle’s women’s team was integrated under the club’s umbrella for the first time in its history, transitioning to full-time professional status last season and achieving back-to-back promotions into the FA Women’s Championship.
As they prepare to depart, Staveley and Ghodoussi leave behind a club markedly different from the one they acquired, with a promising future both on and off the pitch.
