Rema Talks Competition with Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido
Nigerian heavyweight singer and performer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has shared his views on competing with Afrobeats “big three” artists: Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido.
Rema, a prominent figure in the Afrobeats scene and a Mavin/Jonzing signee, recently sat down with UK media platform GRM Daily for the latest episode of Thoughts In A Culli. During the interview, Rema, whose sophomore album ‘HEIS’ is making waves, discussed various topics, including his career, personal life, and the Afrobeats genre.
When asked by show host Post, the CEO of GRM Daily, about competing with Afrobeats heavyweights, Rema was clear. He emphasized that he doesn’t feel the need to compete with his esteemed colleagues. Instead, he focuses on respecting them and avoiding fan-driven comparisons.
Rema explained that he didn’t know Burna Boy, Wizkid, or Davido personally five years ago, so he doesn’t see a need to compete with them now. To him, it’s more important to concentrate on his growth and artistry rather than trying to “dunk on them.”
He added that while lyrics might sometimes imply superiority, he views it as part of the sport of music. Outside the competitive realm, he believes in maintaining love and respect for one another.
Rema’s perspective highlights his maturity and focus on personal development, setting a positive example for upcoming artists in the Afrobeats industry.
