Seun Kuti Calls Out Media Over Burna Boy’s Misattributed Achievements

Renowned musician Seun Kuti has criticized the media for wrongly attributing accomplishments to Burna Boy, highlighting a pervasive issue in the industry.

In an interview with The Public Republic, Kuti expressed frustration over instances where Burna Boy received credit for feats he did not solely achieve. For example, Burna Boy was inaccurately hailed as the first artist to perform at Coachella in 2020, a distinction Kuti earned in 2012.

Kuti further clarified that Burna Boy’s Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album wasn’t unprecedented, noting his brother Femi Kuti’s prior nominations in the same category.

Kuti revealed his album ‘Black Times’ received a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album, though it was overlooked by African award bodies. This disparity underscored his assertion of media bias.

Feeling marginalized, Kuti lamented, “They didn’t acknowledge my name among Nigerian artists nominated for the 66th Grammys. It’s like I’m from Togo.”

Ultimately, Kuti called upon the media to rectify these errors and recognize artists’ achievements accurately and fairly.
