Should Weak Cristiano Ronaldo Be Dropped from Portugal Squad?

Former England manager Sam Allardyce has urged Portugal coach Roberto Martinez to bench Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal’s quarterfinal game against France. Allardyce argues that the 39-year-old has become a liability for Portugal at Euro 2024.

Ronaldo is under immense pressure to redeem his image at the tournament in Germany, as his performances have been underwhelming. Allardyce, who previously managed Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle, shared his views on William Hill and Footy Accumulator’s podcast, No Tippy Tappy Football.

“Given the talent that Portugal have in their squad, I think they’ve been quite disappointing. They’ve got so much talent and so much ability on the ball, but they’re having to carry Ronaldo now.”

“Even though he is still very fit for his age, he simply doesn’t have the same energy levels anymore. The other players have to carry him and they’re good enough to do it, but he still hasn’t scored yet. Roberto Martínez won’t be brave enough to drop Ronaldo,” Allardyce remarked.

This controversial opinion has sparked a heated debate among fans and pundits alike, questioning whether it’s time for Portugal to make a bold move. The decision to bench a legendary player like Ronaldo is fraught with emotion and strategic implications, leaving everyone wondering what Martinez will decide.
