Flavour Recounts Being Asked to Leave Stage for PSquare
Nigerian high-life singer Flavour N’abania, born Chinedu Okoli, recently opened up about a pivotal moment in his career when he was asked to leave the stage for the famous duo PSquare. In a candid interview with the “In My Opinion” podcast, Flavour recounted how this experience reshaped his approach to music and set him on a path to creating his unique sound.
Flavour, who started his music journey as a choir conductor and drummer in church, shared that the incident occurred at a popular spot in Enugu, where he had already built a solid fan base. During a performance, PSquare, fresh off the release of their hit “Temptation,” arrived to promote their show. The promoters immediately instructed Flavour to stop his performance to make way for PSquare.
Flavour vividly described the moment: “I switched off, passed the microphone, and went to sit. Then when Paul of PSquare picked up the mic and just said, ‘This na temptation,’ everywhere scattered.”
This moment of realization was crucial for Flavour. He understood that the key difference between himself and PSquare was their ability to create their own sound and identity as artists. This realization inspired Flavour to transition from being just a musician to becoming a full-fledged artist, a journey that, he admits, was challenging.
Reflecting on the experience, Flavour said, “So I decided to change from a music man to an artist. That was the difficult part because I thought it was going to be easy. I could play, I could sing, but to create your own sound, where are you going to start from? The best way to go about it was to start afresh.”
This transformation marked the beginning of Flavour’s rise to becoming one of Nigeria’s most beloved high-life musicians, known for his unique sound and artistic identity.
