Morata and Rodri Received Match Suspension by UEFA
Spain’s Alvaro Morata and Rodri have been handed a match suspension by UEFA for misconduct during Spain’s Euro 2024 victory parade.
The two key Spanish players, Alvaro Morata and Rodri, received a one-match ban from UEFA for their actions during the celebration. According to The Athletic, the players were caught on video singing “It’s Spanish, Gibraltar is Spanish,” which led Gibraltar’s FA to file a complaint with UEFA, calling the song “extremely provocative and insulting.”
Following the complaint, UEFA conducted disciplinary proceedings, resulting in the suspension of AC Milan striker Alvaro Morata and Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
The incident took place after Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final held in Berlin on July 14, securing Spain’s fourth European championship. The political tension between Spain and Britain over Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, added further context to the controversy.
Rodri, who was substituted at half-time in the final, and Morata, Spain’s captain, became the focus of attention due to their controversial remarks during the celebrations. This suspension underscores UEFA’s commitment to maintaining sportsmanship and respect in football.
