Portable Declares: I’m Rich Now, Can’t Do Any Protest
Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has declared why he won’t join the upcoming nationwide hardship protest. The controversial singer urged Nigerians gearing up for the protest to focus on self-development and seek support from influential people.
Scheduled to run from August 1 through August 10, 2024, the 10-day demonstration aims to express grievances over the nation’s state. Despite pleas from President Bola Tinubu and various civil society organizations, many Nigerians are mobilizing for the protest on social media.
Organizers have also called on influential Nigerians to leverage their platforms to galvanize support. Responding to these calls, Portable, who gained fame during the EndSARS protest in 2020, made his stance clear.
In a viral video, Portable explained that affluent individuals like Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola don’t participate in protests, implying such actions are reserved for the economically deprived. He encouraged his fans and fellow Nigerians to focus on personal growth and build connections that can elevate their status.
“It will not end well for anyone who suggests I should go and sing at a protest. Why don’t you take the microphone and sing at the protest yourself? If you are hustling and have work to do, you will not join them to protest. Fight for yourself, and not for Nigeria.
“Nigeria is okay. It is you that is not yet okay. The money is where it is; you are the one who is not working, and you don’t stay loyal to your helper. People who will help you are also available; you are the one who is not networking. Fight for yourself, so that your career will not turn into a barrier,” he stated.
